Technology We Use
Dr Emil Fernando and the team at Port Pacific Dental have the experience and qualifications to use some of the most innovative and modern dental technologies in Port Macquarie. We also serve patients in the communities of Sancrox, Thrumster, King Creek, Lake Innes, Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills, Laurieton, Wauchope, Kempsey, Crescenthead and South West Rocks.
Please read about our featured technologies below to learn how we use them in our dental practice.
Intraoral Camera
What if you could see exactly what your dentist sees? You’d probably find it simpler to make informed decisions about your oral health!
Intraoral cameras allow you to do precisely that. Using a small digital camera embedded in a wand, the dentist can move it around your mouth and transmit the images instantly to a chairside monitor. This allows you to clearly see everything the dentist describes, including damage to the teeth and signs that might indicate periodontal disease.
Digital Impressions/Intra-Oral Scans
At Port Pacific Dental, Dr Fernando will create an intr-oral scan to model your unique set of teeth. These digital scans are crucial for any treatment where an appliance or restoration needs to fit around and among your existing teeth and jaw. A traditional impression consists of a tray and pliable material that Dr Fernando would press against your teeth to record each surface, shape and alignment. Digital scans assist in the process of Smile Design, digital workflow and communication with different labs.
Digital impressions create a model of your teeth without a bunch of gooey material being stuck into your mouth. Instead, we use an imaging device that fits into your mouth. In a matter of minutes, this device will take images of your entire mouth and send them directly to a computer for multiple uses. Digital impressions are more precise and not dependent on unreliable material, air bubbles, distortions, or a process people generally find uncomfortable.
No two sets of teeth are the same. With a digital dental impression, we can create a highly accurate, reliable and comfortable treatment outcome with less waste.
Panaromic X-Rays
Most people understand that a dental x-ray allows the Port Pacific Dental Team to see inside your teeth to diagnose emerging conditions and diagnose issues that we need to treat. Traditional x-rays take small images of certain parts of your mouth such that we take several shots to assemble a complete picture. On the other hand, a panoramic dental x-ray creates an image of your whole mouth, including all of your teeth and your jaw, including your temporomandibular joints, or your TMJs. This technology can even show the structure of your nasal area and sinuses.
This expanded view helps Dr Emil Fernando offer a more comprehensive diagnosis of many conditions, such as:
- Jaw bone problems, including TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Broken tooth roots
- Impacted teeth
- Root and gum infections
- Tumours
- Facial anomalies
- Bone levels
Another advantage of a panoramic x-ray is that it flattens the view of your naturally curved jawbone, which make it easier for Dr Fernando to uncover potential problems.

Modern Sterlisation and Infection Control
Keeping our patients healthy and safe is our greatest priority, which is why we use the most stringent and strict guidelines to sterilise and disinfect our dental practice. Not only do we use disposable instruments where we can, we thoroughly sterilise reusable instruments using a disinfecting solution followed by a heat and pressure combination in our sterilisation unit.
Additionally, we disinfect all common areas between patients to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and pathogens.
Rotary Endodontics
When Dr Emil Fernando recommends root canal therapy, the procedure is intended to save a tooth with a root infection in danger of being lost. The essence of the procedure is the removal of all infected tissues inside the tooth and down through the root via slender passages called canals. Before your tooth can be saved, those canals must also be cleaned out.
Rotary endodontics allows Dr Fernando to comfortably and effectively remove your tooth infection and prepare the entire tooth for sealing. The tool looks like a small wand with a curved tip to match the shape of your tooth’s root canal. It is also made from nickel-titanium for strength and bio-compatibility.
Rotary endodontics makes root canal therapy considerably less stressful and quite a bit more precise. Additionally, the procedure can be far more efficient than old manual file methods.
